This agent is a solution of sodium chloride administered through a tube inserted into a vein (intravenous infusion). It contains sodium chloride at a concentration corresponding to the concentration of salts in the blood. You are given this medicine for fluid or salt administration when: you have a lack of fluids or a shortage of fluids and sodium (isotonic or hypotonic dehydration); you have a low chloride level in the blood and an abnormally high blood pH; you have lost chloride. This solution is also used: for immediate replenishment of the blood volume after you have lost blood; as a carrier to administer other electrolytes or medicines; for treatment of wounds and moistening wound tamponades and dressings. The medicine is for intravenous use or is used to flush or moisten.
