Vicryl Rapide is chemically identical to Vicryl in terms of structure and coating and has the same excellent knot-tying and handling properties. However, Vicryl Rapide is made from a polymer with a lower molecular weight, which means that it loses its tensile strength more quickly. This property makes Vicryl Rapide the ideal suture for all applications where the tissue only requires short-term wound support, such as episiotomy, circumcision, skin sutures in children and mucosal sutures in the mouth. Vicryl Rapide retains 50% of its original tensile strength after 5 days on average; after 12 days, the tensile strength is reduced to zero. Vicryl Rapide is sterilised by radiation.
